Publishing

Publishing makes your pages live on the website. This guide covers the publishing workflow, status indicators, and site rebuilds.

Publishing a Page

To publish a page:

  1. Navigate to Sites → Select your site → Pages
  2. Click the page you want to publish
  3. Review your content in the page editor
  4. Click Publish

What Happens When You Publish

When you publish a page, the system:

  1. Renders the page to static HTML using the template and components
  2. Injects design variables from your site theme
  3. Adds SEO metadata (title, description, Open Graph, Twitter Cards, JSON-LD)
  4. Writes the HTML file to the publish store (S3)
  5. Creates a version snapshot for version history
  6. Updates the sitemap to include the new page
  7. Sets the publish status to "published"

Publishing Requirements

Before you can publish a page:

  • All required component fields must be filled in
  • The page must have a valid slug
  • You must have publish permissions for the site

Unpublishing a Page

To unpublish a page:

  1. Navigate to the page list
  2. Click the ⋮ menu next to the published page
  3. Select Unpublish
  4. Confirm the action

What Happens When You Unpublish

When you unpublish a page:

  1. Removes the HTML file from the publish store
  2. Updates the sitemap to exclude the page
  3. Sets the publish status to "unpublished"
  4. Preserves the page content in the CMS (you can republish later)

Publish Status Indicators

Pages have three publish states:

Status
Badge Color
Meaning
Draft
Grey
Never published, work in progress
Published
Green
Currently live on the website
Unpublished
Amber
Previously published, now offline

Status badges appear in:

  • Page list
  • Page editor header
  • Site dashboard

Viewing Published Pages

To view a published page on your website:

  1. Navigate to the page in the CMS
  2. Click View Live in the page editor

This opens the published page in a new tab at its public URL.

Site Rebuild

A site rebuild republishes all published pages in a site. This is useful when:

  • You've updated design variables or breakpoints
  • You've modified a template used by multiple pages
  • You've uploaded a new version of a component
  • You need to regenerate the sitemap or robots.txt

Performing a Site Rebuild

  1. Navigate to Sites → Select your site
  2. Click Settings → Advanced
  3. Click Rebuild Site
  4. Confirm the action

What Happens During a Rebuild

The system:

  1. Identifies all published pages in the site
  2. Renders each page with current templates, components, and design variables
  3. Writes updated HTML files to the publish store
  4. Regenerates the sitemap with all published pages
  5. Regenerates robots.txt with current settings
  6. Reports any failures (pages that failed to render)
Note: Rebuilds can take several minutes for sites with many pages. You'll see a progress indicator during the rebuild.

Version History

Every time you publish a page, the system creates a version snapshot. This allows you to:

  • View previous versions of a page
  • Compare versions to see what changed
  • Restore a previous version if needed

Viewing Version History

  1. Navigate to the page editor
  2. Click Versions in the toolbar
  3. Browse the version list

Each version shows:

  • Version number
  • Published date and time
  • User who published it

Restoring a Previous Version

  1. Open the version history
  2. Click Restore next to the version you want to restore
  3. Confirm the action

This:

  • Copies the version content to the current draft
  • Does not automatically publish the restored version
  • Allows you to review before republishing

Publishing Best Practices

Before Publishing

  • Preview your changes: Use the live preview to check appearance
  • Test on mobile: Ensure responsive behavior is correct
  • Check all links: Verify internal and external links work
  • Review SEO metadata: Ensure title, description, and images are set
  • Proofread content: Check for typos and formatting issues

After Publishing

  • View the live page: Confirm it appears correctly on the website
  • Test functionality: Click links, check images, verify layout
  • Check search engines: Monitor how the page appears in search results
  • Monitor analytics: Track page views and AI crawler activity

When to Rebuild

  • After theme changes: Rebuild to apply new design variables to all pages
  • After template updates: Rebuild pages using the modified template
  • After component updates: Rebuild to use the latest component version
  • Periodically: Rebuild monthly to ensure consistency

Publishing Workflow

Recommended workflow for content teams:

  1. Draft: Author creates and edits page content
  2. Review: Editor reviews and provides feedback
  3. Revise: Author makes requested changes
  4. Approve: Editor approves for publishing
  5. Publish: User with publish permissions publishes the page
  6. Verify: Team verifies the live page

Troubleshooting

Page Won't Publish

If a page fails to publish:

  1. Check required fields: Ensure all required component fields are filled
  2. Verify permissions: Confirm you have publish permissions for the site
  3. Check component validity: Ensure all components are valid and available
  4. Review error messages: Read the error message for specific issues
  5. Contact support: If the issue persists, contact your administrator

Published Page Looks Wrong

If a published page doesn't match the preview:

  1. Clear browser cache: Hard refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R or Cmd+Shift+R)
  2. Check CDN cache: Wait a few minutes for CDN cache to clear
  3. Republish the page: Try publishing again
  4. Rebuild the site: Perform a full site rebuild
  5. Check design variables: Verify theme settings are correct

Sitemap Not Updating

If the sitemap doesn't reflect recent changes:

  1. Perform a site rebuild: This regenerates the sitemap
  2. Check publish status: Ensure pages are actually published
  3. Verify sitemap URL: Confirm you're viewing the correct sitemap
  4. Clear CDN cache: Wait for CDN cache to expire
